- When conducting transient studies on an electrical system, it is important to have an accurate model representation of each of the various system components. This paper compares different methodologies currently used to obtain black box transformer models based on frequency response field measurements. The key point here is to show how good and well implemented black-box modeling procedures can lead to different time-domain results when simulating transient signals. So, this paper presents an comparative study of methods for deriving black-box models aiming transient studies in the power system. It also highlights the need to consider the passivity of the data set and its corresponding model in order to ensure a numerically stable simulation will be obtained. A gas-insulated substation (GIS), with single phase 525/18kV, 256MVA generator transformers, is used as a case study for the analysis. The resulting black box models are then used within an EMTP simulation of a switching event within the substation. The simulation results facilitate an assessment of the relative merits of each of the reviewed modeling methodologies.
